Lakota East Holds Off Princeton for 46-41 Victory in GMC Showdown at Cintas Center
CINCINNATI, OH – In a thrilling Greater Miami Conference (GMC) battle, the Lakota East Thunderhawks overcame a late challenge from the Princeton Vikings to secure a 46-41 victory at the Cintas Center during the Holiday Hardwood Classic.
The game was a defensive battle from the start, with both teams struggling to find offense in the opening quarter, which ended in a 7-7 tie. Princeton’s Erin Thomas and Lakota East’s Brooke Asher then heated up in the second quarter, trading several three-pointers to keep things close. Lakota East managed to edge ahead, holding a slim 19-17 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Princeton surged with an 8-1 run to start the third quarter, taking a 25-20 lead. However, Lakota East responded with steady play, and Faith Chau got on the board late in the quarter to keep the Thunderhawks within striking distance. At the end of the third, Princeton led 31-27, setting the stage for a dramatic final period.
The fourth quarter saw the Thunderhawks come alive. Asher opened with a deep three-pointer, and back-to-back and-one plays from Bella Sturgill gave Lakota East the lead at 36-33. Princeton answered with an and-one from Erin Thomas, but a Lakota East turnover allowed the Vikings a brief window to regain control. Despite the late push, the Thunderhawks held firm, with clutch free throws and key defensive stops, securing the 46-41 victory.
Bella Sturgill was named the Beacon Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Player of the Game for her pivotal contributions, finishing with 19 points, including the two crucial and-ones that swung momentum in Lakota East’s favor.
With the win, Lakota East improves to 6-4 on the season and remains undefeated in GMC play at 5-0. Princeton falls to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference, as they look to regroup for their upcoming games.
Lakota East’s next challenge will be to maintain their strong conference play, while Princeton aims to bounce back and stay competitive in the GMC standings.
